The organizers of the Panevezys International Ceramic Symposium invite artists to apply for participation in the 2016 symposium. The symposium concludes with an exhibition of the work produced during the symposium and with the installation of each participant’s outdoor sculptures. The participants will be required to donate 2 pieces of artwork; outdoor sculptures will be installed in the Gallery Sculpture Garden. All other works are the property of the artist.
ORGANIZERS AND SPONSORS
The Panevezys Civic Art Gallery, Ceramics Company UAB Midene, the Panevezys City Council, and the Lithuanian Council for Culture.
TIME AND LOCATION
July 1 to July 29, 2016; in the City of Panevezys, Lithuania.
*Twelve artists will be invited.
*All participants pay their travel expenses to and from Panevezys.
*The participants should have health insurance and bring any necessary medication, including over-the –counter brands, as those items may not be available in Lithuania.
ROOM AND BOARD
All participants are housed and provided full board free of charge.
FACILITY AND MATERIALS
*The organizers provide the ceramic facility and materials.
*The clay is a mixture of raw crushed clay and a coarse vitreous grog of the same clay.
*The symposium kiln is a natural gas downdraft. The interior dimensions are 1.2m x 2.4m by 1.4m high; the floor has 2 shelves 1.2m x 1.2m each. Some shelving will be available for firings. The firing temperature is approximately 1260ºC - 1280ºC. Firings take three days.
*Additional smaller electric kilns will be available for participants at their own expense.
*A potters wheel is available to be shared by all the participants.
*Metal oxides (cobalt, red iron, black copper, chrome, titanium, zinc, manganese and nickel) and some local materials (dolomite, chalk, limestone, feldspar) will be available.
*It is advisable to bring your own favourite tools and materials (compatible to the firing temperature, 1260ºC - 1280ºC) that you consider necessary as they may not be available at the facility.
June 30 - Arrival
July 21-24 – Tour of Lithuania
There will be a conference, open to the public. Each symposium artist is asked to participate in the conference by presenting a formal paper (usually in slide form) or a demonstration. Please bring materials for formal presentation.
There will be a number of meetings of an informal nature (limited to symposium participants and friends) for the exchange of information, background, and ideas. Each symposium artist is asked to participate by presenting a paper, usually in the form of a slide lecture. Please bring materials for informal presentation.
The symposium concludes with the opening reception in the Civic Gallery for the work produced during the symposium. The outdoor sculptures remains in the Gallery Sculpture Garden and the organizers select two works by each participant; these are given as his/her contribution to the collection at the Civic Gallery. All other works created are the property of the artist.
The Civic Gallery has also started a library and welcomes any donations of printed material which reflects the art trends in the country of the participant: books, catalogues, videos (PAL format), magazines, etc.
Application materials must include the following:
*Completed application form,
*A sketch or plan for a proposed outdoor ceramic sculpture (maximum base 1x1 m),
*Slide or photo portfolio with a minimum of 10 artworks (need not be large scale),
--Application must be received by February 15, 2016.
--Notification of acceptance (or regrets) will be sent out in March.
